In just 15 years, the American Academy of Ballets production of the Nutcracker has become a family tradition in Western New York. Geared especially to children, Maris Battaglia's rendition of the holiday classic features a unique combination of old fashioned charm and highly creative visual excitement. This years production will be held on December 4th and 5th at U.B. Center for the Arts. This seasons performances promises to keep young audience members on the edge of their seats
Even the youngest of children will experience a sense of enchantment when they see the magic before them. Clara and her Prince fly around the world in a hot air balloon as they visit various countries. In China a 10 foot dragon awaits them, in Holland a giant butterfly actually flies across the stage and at the North Pole Santa and his elves put the finishing touches on holiday toys. Clara and her Prince also go "Under the Sea" where lobsters, turtles, and mermaids delight and before they land in the "Land of Sweets" they stop off at a Victorian Circus. Color and Magic fill the three ring circus as animals, clowns, fire eaters, tight rope walkers and much more entertain. In the Land of Sweets the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier perform an amazing pas de duex.
Special guest artist, Daniel Ubricht, Principal Dancer with the New York City Ballet Company will dance the lead role along side Misa Kuranaga, Principal Dancer with Boston Ballet will once again dance the lead roles of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. "They are an incredible couple", notes Battaglia. "Daniel is an amazing dancer" says Battaglia. When he jumps you think he will never land. He is exciting to watch and the audience will be enthralled with them. Last year they brough the house down and received a standing ovation!
The Nutcracker is a magical experience for children and adults alike. In order for the youngest members of the audience to better understand the ballet, the story is narrated by Clara's grandfather.
In addition to the hot air balloon that fly Clara and her Prince around the world there are several other flying effects. Angels fly in the second act opening. Drosselmeyer flies, and the butterfly flys in Holland. "We are very excited to have "Flying by Foy" be part of our production" says Battaglia, "They are the same company that does flying effects on Broadway and throughout the United Stated. It really is quite thrilling."
